Crown lengthening

At The Smile Gallery, we offer a surgical procedure called crown lengthening, whereby gum tissue is trimmed down and reshaped.

Do you need it?

Crown lengthening is often performed for cosmetic reasons. And this is normally on patients with a ‘gummy smile’.

A ‘gummy smile’ is an abundance of gum tissue that can make teeth appear unusually short. In some cases, the dentist may also need to remove some bone.

If a patient needs a crown but does not have enough visible tooth surface to support it, they may require crown lengthening to expose more of the base of the tooth first.

Procedure

A patient may also undergo a procedure to treat a severe case of gum disease. The surgery is often called a gingivectomy and only involves the removal of the diseased gum tissue.

Either way, your dentist will remove the necessary tissue before reshaping the remaining tissue and stitching it back into place.
