A gap in your smile can be more than just a cosmetic concern. Whether it’s due to an accident, decay, or gum disease, a missing tooth can affect your confidence, your ability to chew properly, and even the alignment of your remaining teeth. The good news? You don’t have to live with that gap forever! Here at The Smile Gallery, we offer a range of excellent solutions to replace missing teeth, helping you regain a full, functional, and fabulous smile. Let’s explore some of the popular options.

Why Bother Replacing a Missing Tooth, Especially if it’s at the Back?

It’s a fair question. If a missing tooth isn’t immediately visible, you might wonder if it’s worth replacing. But here’s the thing: your teeth work together as a team. When one is lost, a cascade of consequences can follow.

Chewing can become difficult, leading you to subconsciously favour one side of your mouth, which can cause uneven wear on other teeth. Adjacent teeth may start to tilt or drift into the empty space, disrupting your bite and potentially creating new gaps or crowding issues.

The tooth directly above or below the gap can also over-erupt, essentially growing out of its socket because it has nothing to bite against.

Perhaps most significantly over time, bone loss can occur in the jaw beneath the missing tooth, as it no longer receives the stimulation from chewing, which can eventually alter your facial structure. And, of course, even a less visible gap can make you self-conscious about smiling or laughing freely. So, yes, replacing a missing tooth is generally a very good idea for your overall oral health and well-being.

Your Tooth Replacement Options: A Closer Look

At The Smile Gallery, we’ll always discuss the best options for your individual situation. The main contenders for tooth replacement are dental implants, dental bridges, and dentures.

Dental Implants: The Gold Standard

A dental implant is essentially an artificial tooth root, usually made of biocompatible titanium, that is surgically placed into your jawbone. Once it has fully integrated with the bone—a process called osseointegration—a custom-made crown, which is the visible tooth part, is securely attached to it.

Implants are celebrated for looking and feeling just like natural teeth, offering incredible stability. A major advantage is their ability to preserve jawbone; the implant stimulates the bone, preventing the loss that typically occurs with missing teeth. Unlike bridges, implants don’t require any alteration to neighbouring healthy teeth, which is a significant benefit. With proper care, they can last for many, many years—often a lifetime—making them a very durable solution. Caring for them is straightforward, too, as you simply brush and floss them like your natural teeth.

However, implants do represent a greater upfront investment compared to other options, though their longevity can make them cost-effective in the long run. The process involves a minor surgical procedure, and the entire timeline, including healing and integration, can take several months. Implants are highly versatile, suitable for replacing a single tooth, multiple teeth, or even supporting a full denture. Our experienced dentist, Dr. Rahul Neve, has a keen interest in providing dental implant solutions and can fully assess your suitability.

Dental Bridges: Bridging the Gap

A dental bridge literally ‘bridges’ the gap created by one or more missing teeth. It’s typically constructed from a false tooth (or teeth) fused between two crowns. These crowns are then cemented onto the natural teeth (known as abutment teeth) on either side of the gap, anchoring the bridge firmly in place.

Bridges offer the advantage of being fixed, so unlike removable dentures, they don’t need to be taken out. They can be designed to look very natural, blending seamlessly with your existing teeth. The process for getting a bridge is also generally quicker than that for implants, usually completed within a few weeks.

A significant consideration for bridges is that the adjacent abutment teeth need to be prepared, meaning they are filed down to support the crowns. This isn’t always ideal if those teeth are perfectly healthy.

Cleaning under the false tooth of a bridge requires extra diligence to prevent decay or gum problems around the supporting teeth. Furthermore, the jawbone beneath the false tooth isn’t stimulated, so bone loss can still occur in that area over time. Bridges are a good option for replacing one or two missing teeth where the adjacent teeth are suitable for crowning or already have crowns.

Dentures: Removable Solutions

Dentures are removable appliances featuring artificial teeth attached to a gum-coloured plastic or, in some cases, metal base. There are two main types: partial dentures, used when some natural teeth remain and often using clasps to grip onto existing teeth for support, and complete dentures, used when all teeth in an arch (upper or lower) are missing.

Dentures are often the most affordable option, particularly when replacing multiple missing teeth. The process is generally non-invasive, requiring no surgery unless teeth need to be extracted beforehand. Their main drawback can be stability; especially with lower dentures, they can sometimes slip or click, and it can take time to get used to how they feel and to speak and eat with them. They require regular, thorough cleaning, including removal and often soaking overnight.

Because the jawbone continues to recede without tooth roots, dentures may need relining or replacing over time to maintain a good fit. Some wearers may also experience sore spots. However, modern dentures are much improved, and we can discuss high-quality options that offer a better fit and aesthetics.
